Days after former World Cup winner Damien Martyn was put in an induced coma after suffering from Meningitis, former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist has shared that some positive signs have come out from the various medical tests Martyn has gone through. 54-year-old Martyn was transported from his Gold Coast home after being unwell on Boxing Day to a Brisbane hospital and was put in an induced coma after the diagnosis of meningitis . Gilchrist also shared that more details will come out in some time about Martyn’s health and how he is hopeful of Martyn making a recovery.

“He’s still in the hospital. There’ll be more details come out as they come to hand but certainly in the last 24 hours, some positive signs are the indications coming out of the various tests he’s having. There’s been so much interest and love. A fine player, terrific fella. I just hope he can continue a recovery.” Gilchrist told Fox Cricket.

Martyn, who was part of the 2003 World Cup winning Australian team, played in 67 Tests for Australia from 1992 to 2006 and scored 4406 runs at an average of 46.37 including 13 centuries. Martyn also played in 208 ODIs for Australia and scored 5346 runs in the format at an average of 40.80 with five centuries and 37 half-centuries. Gilchrist, who too was member of the 2003 ODI World Cup winning team, also extended gratitude to fans and cricketing world for sending well wishes for Martyn’s recovery.

“On behalf of Damien Martyn, a great friend, a former teammate of a few of us … on behalf of his family, Amanda his partner, thank you to everyone for the heartfelt love and wishes and care for Damien as he’s gone through and continues to go through a challenging time,” said Gilchrist.

Former AFL player Brad Hardie had first announced Martyn’s condition on Perth’s 6PR radio. “Damien Martyn, the champ from WA, fantastic batsman … unfortunately took ill on Boxing Day and currently is residing in a Queensland hospital and he is in for the fight of his life. I’d like everybody to certainly have their best wishes and positive thoughts for Marto. God give him strength. Let’s hope he can pull through because it’s really serious.” Hardie had said.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg had also talked about the Australian cricketing community sending their best wishes for Martyn’s recovery. “I’m saddened to hear of Damien’s illness. The best wishes of everyone at CA and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time.” Greenberg said in a statement.
