Angered by constantly being called a thief by people in her village, a 13-year-old girl in Chhattisgarh threw two of her cousins, a four-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl, into a well, leading to their deaths, police said.
This came after the four-year-old also started picking up on the taunts that he heard from others in the village, police said.
The incident took place on Sunday in Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai (KCG) district. The 13-year-old girl’s father and the father of the two deceased children are brothers.
After the two went missing on Sunday morning, family members, along with other village residents, started frantically searching for them. The body of one of the children was then spotted in a well located in a vegetable garden. When the well was drained, the other body was also found.
Suspicion fell on the 13-year-old, who was seen with her cousins some time before they went missing, officials said. They said she allegedly confessed to throwing the children in the well before the family and police.
The police said the girl was remorseful during questioning and said she threw the boy in the well because he was taunting her by calling her a thief.
“She had allegedly stolen some money and a phone, after which villagers started calling her a thief, which angered her. The boy also started calling her a thief, due to which she got even angrier,” an officer said.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s father, police have registered a case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
The girl has been sent to a juvenile correctional home. She was in class 8 and lived with her parents and brother.
