Senate passes federal funding bill, opens route to end US government shutdown
The US Senate on Sunday passed the federal funding bill, taking the first step to end the longest-running government shutdown, which entered its 40th day. The Senate voted 60-40 to move toward passing compromise legislation to fund the government and hold a later vote on extending Affordable Care Act tax credits that expire January 1, 2026. The bill was passed after at least eight Democrats backed the agreement proposed by President Donald Trump and the Republicans. The bill now proceeds to the House of Representatives for approval before being sent to President Trump for his signature. Read more

Delhi’s Nehru Stadium to be demolished for new sports city
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi, which hosted the 1982 Asian Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games, is set to be demolished to make space for a Sports City. The proposed sports city will have venues for all the major disciplines, along with residential facilities for the athletes. Originally built for the 1982 Asian Games, the JLN Stadium was last renovated at a cost of Rs 50 crore for the recently concluded World Para Athletics Championship. The stadium had undergone a major upgrade at a cost of Rs 961 crore ahead of the CWG 2010. Read more

Delhi Police registers FIR over protest against air pollution
The Delhi Police on Monday registered an FIR in connection with the protests against rising air pollution in the Delhi-NCR at the India Gate on Sunday. The FIR, against unknown persons, was registered for violating the prohibitory orders promulgated in the areas. According to the police, the organisers were informed that Section 163 BNSS is in force in the entire area of the New Delhi District except Jantar Mantar, and therefore, the protest at India Gate cannot be permitted. A large number of demonstrators had gathered at the India Gate on Sunday to protest against the worsening air pollution in Delhi. Read more

SC warns against trend of ‘scandalous allegations’ against judges
The Supreme Court on Monday issued a strong warning against what it described as a “growing trend” of litigants and lawyers making “scurrilous and scandalous allegations against judges. The SC bench of CJI BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran made the observations while hearing the suo motu contempt proceedings initiated against lawyers who allegedly raised objectionable remarks against Telangana High Court judge Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya. The CJI himself had come under attack recently over a comment he made while hearing a PIL about the restoration of an idol in a temple in Khajuraho. Read more

South Korea’s ousted leader Yoon indicted for flying drones over North Korea
Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been indicted on charges of ordering drone flights over North Korea in a deliberate bid to stoke tensions and justify his plans to declare martial law. North Korea had accused Seoul of flying drones over its capital, Pyongyang, to drop propaganda leaflets three times in October 2024. Yoon had triggered a massive political controversy in South Korea after he imposed martial law on December 3, 2024, and sent troops to surround the National Assembly. However, the National Assembly voted against the martial law, and it was lifted the same night. Yoon, who was impeached and removed from office, is still in jail, standing trial on charges, including masterminding a rebellion. Read more
