The Indian cricket team’s ODI vice captain Shreyas Iyer has provided an update on his health after he was admitted to a Sydney hospital for a laceration of the spleen with internal bleeding. “I’m currently in recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received- it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer posted on his social media handles on Thursday.
Iyer had injured himself when he claimed a catch to dismiss Australian batsman Alex Carey in the third ODI against Australia on Saturday. The incident happened when Iyer ran back from point and, after taking the catch, hurt his rib while tumbling down to the ground.
On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had provided a second update on Iyer’s health, saying that the batter had “sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding.”
In a statement attributed to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, BCCI noted: “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His (Iyer’s) condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress.”
In his press conference before the first T20I, India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav was asked about the injury to Iyer.
“We are not doctors. When we saw from outside, when the catch was taken (by Shreyas), it looked like it was normal. But none of us were there, only those who were there can tell what actually happened. So they said after going inside it was felt you will have to pay good attention (to him). Then he was rushed to the specialist, and we were told about what happened. After that we talked to him, when he was talking normally, we felt that it is a little better now, because doctors and physios told us that it was an unfortunate incident, which happens rarely. But sometimes rare incidents happened to rare talent,” Yadav said.
