With Liverpool manager Arne Slot talking about Manchester United playing long-ball tactics against his team during Liverpool’s 1-2 loss in Premier League last Saturday, Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has talked about how he doesnt care what Slot is saying and how he is clear with his plans for the team. Manchester United had scored a 2-1 win over Liverpool last Saturday and it was for the first time that the team scored consecutive wins under Amorim in the Premier League since the Portuguese took charge of the team in November last year. With United set to face Brighton on Saturday evening, Amorim shared how he doesn’t care what Slot and other people are saying about his tactics and how the team needs to adapt to the game.
“Liverpool is in the past, I don’t want to comment. I understand everything, I am pleased the team can play different games. It was an important win but I was first to say we need to play better with the ball – I don’t care what Slot had to say. I can watch the game and say we need to do better in the future but sometimes you need to adapt to the game. I don’t need anyone else to evaluate my team. We should play better with the ball and we are going to try and do that in this game.” Amorim said in the pre match press conference on Friday evening.
Last Saturday saw United scoring a 2-1 win over Liverpool with Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scoring one goal each for the side with Cody Gakpo scoring the solitary goal for Liverpool. In a match attended by 60,337 fans, Liverpool suffered their third consecutive loss this season with the team defending 59 long balls in the match against United. Slot talked about the long-ball tactics of Manchester United and shared how the team needs to play the long-ball tactics by the opposition. “The main difference between this season and last season is the playing styles we face. I have looked when we had a few days off at how many long balls we already had to defend – 178 in seven games and then United came and we had to defend 59 long balls. That’s different from the first half of last season. The way to unlock it is a moment of magic, which we had in the first half of last season a lot with Mo (Salah), or a set-piece, which we had at Frankfurt as well, because that again was a low block. But two set-pieces unlocked the game for us,” Slot had said in a press conference earlier this week.
United will face Brighton today evening and will look to score their third consecutive win in the Premier League. With Bruno Fernandes set to play in his 300th appearance for United, Amorim was asked about who beyond Fernandes maintains the standards expected at the club and the Portuguese was quick to reply mentioning Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw apart from Nous Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez. “Harry Maguire. Diogo Dalot tries to do that. Luke Shaw can show in some moments by the way he plays, when he’s so focused. I think Nous (Mazraoui) has a good impact. Licha [Lisandro Martínez], he is really important in this.” Amorim said.
