India opener Rohit Sharma had to wade through two running mix-ups, a barrage of disciplined bowling from Josh Hazlewood and another top-order collapse against Australia in Adelaide on Thursday to reach his slowest ODI half-century in over a decade. Besides, the former India captain also had to contend with an argument with his third-wicket batting partner, the new vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer.
After surviving a close run-out call early in the innings, after being sent back by captain Shubman Gill, Rohit was left miffed by Iyer’s reluctance to pick up on a single while the duo was attempting to lift India out of trouble.
During the 14th over, an opportunity for a single arose when Josh Hazlewood struck Rohit’s pads, deflecting the ball to the off-side. The 38-year-old was keen to take the run but received no call from Iyer at the non-striker’s end, forcing him to stay put. The stump mic picked up Rohit’s irritated query to Iyer about the non-call. Iyer pushed back, arguing it wasn’t his responsibility to initiate the run. The exchange highlighted the two batters’ struggle to find common ground.

Rohit Sharma: “Aare, tereko call dena padega (You will have to give me the call).”
Rohit Sharma: “Wo saatva over daal raha hai yaar (He’s bowling the seventh over, man).”
Shreyas Iyer: “Mujhe uska angle pata nahi hai. Call do na! (I don’t know his angle. Just give me the call).”

Rohit Sharma: “Mai nahi de sakta hu ye call (I can’t).”
Shreyas Iyer: “Saamne hai aapke (He’s right in front of you).”
The duo would, however, forge a crucial stand for India with their 118-run association partly pushing Australia on the backfoot. Rohit somewhat made up for his slow start with his 59th half-century. Though he felt set for a big score, Rohit holed out on 73 off Mitchell Starc’s bowling before Iyer departed on 61, bowled by leggie Adam Zampa.
