Kavach Railway Latest Update: Indian Railways (IR) is making rapid progress in installing Kavach – an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system – across its network. It aids the Loco Pilot in running of trains within specified speed limits by automatic application of brakes in case Loco Pilot fails to do so and also helps the trains to run safely during inclement weather.
Kavach Railway Project Update
On Monday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Kavach implementation is now in an advanced stage on two major railway corridors. These are: Delhi–Howrah (Kolkata) and Delhi–Mumbai. The minister also added that the ATP system has already been installed on around 1,200 locomotives and its impact will be visible very soon.
Indian Railways Kavach System
Kavach was adopted as National ATP system in July 2020. The Ministry of Railways allocated a fund of Rs 1,673.19 crore for the implementation of Kavach in the financial year 2025-26. Till June’25, the funds utilized on Kavach works was Rs 2,015 crore.
The cost for provision of Track Side including Station equipment of Kavach is approximately Rs 50 Lakhs per Km and cost for provision of Kavach equipment on locomotives is approximately Rs 80 Lakh per Loco.
Implementation of Railways Kavach System
- Installation of Station Kavach at each and every station, block section.
- Installation of RFID Tags throughout the track length.
- Installation of telecom Towers throughout the section.
- Laying of Optical Fibre Cable along the track.
- Provision of Loco Kavach on each and every Locomotive running on Indian Railways
Indian Railways Kavach 4.0
Kavach version 4.0 covers all the major features required for the diverse railway network. This is a significant milestone in safety for Indian Railways. Major improvement in Version 4.0 includes increased Location Accuracy, Improved Information of Signal Aspects in bigger yards, Station to Station Kavach interface on OFC
and Direct Interface to existing Electronic Interlocking System.
