West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has been fined 25 percent of his match fees and handed a demerit point by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for throwing the ball at Yashasvi Jaiswal during the ongoing second Test against India in New Delhi. The ICC said that Seals was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
The ICC also said that Seales had contested the charge levelled by Andy Pycroft and so a formal hearing was required. The incident occured on Friday in the 29th over of India’s first innings, when Seales fielded the ball on his follow-through and threw it at batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, hitting him on the pads.
“The Windies pacer contested that he threw the ball while attempting a run out. The Match Referee, referring to replay clips showing the incident from different angles, concluded that the throw was unnecessary and inappropriate, hitting the batter on the pads when he was within the crease,” said the ICC in its statement.
On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Alex Wharf and fourth umpire K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan had levelled the charge. “Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points,” the ICC said. The previous demerit point for Seales was in a Test match against Bangladesh in December 2024.
West Indies were forced to follow on Day 3 after being all out for 248 runs in their first innings in reply to India’s 518/5. However, they ended the day on a positive note, with half-centuries from Shai Hope and John Campbell helping them win the final session of the third day, making it the first one they had won all series long.
