No. 15 Arizona State outlasts Notre Dame in Game 2 of the Ice Breaker, winning 5-3 and advancing to face Alaska in the Ice Breaker championship game. It’s ASU’s first win of the season.
Game 2 was an offensive explosion, with the two teams combining for over 85 shots on goal. Arizona State opened the scoring with two quick goals late in the first period, the first from captain Kyle Smolen and the second from Noah Powell, his first as a Sun Devil.

The Sun Devils came out in the second period and picked up where they left off in the first, scoring just 53 seconds into the period on Carmelo Crandell’s first collegiate goal off of a beauty of a saucer pass.

But Notre Dame’s offense eventually woke up, scoring back-to-back tallies on long-range point shots from Henry Nelson and Paul Fischer.

Then Arizona State’s Benjamin Kevan joined the party, scoring consecutive highlight-reel goals, his first two collegiate goals. The first was a wicked shot from the high slot that went top shelf. The second came on the breakaway, where he made no mistake and roofed it,

Arizona State goaltender Samuel Urban made 36 saves on 38 shots in his NCAA debut before leaving the game with cramps. Carter Hasley came in in relief, allowing one goal on 12 shots he faced.
ASU moves on to face Alaska in the Ice Breaker championship game Saturday night at 10 p.m. ET. Notre Dame will play No. 8 Quinnipiac in the third-place game at 6 p.m.
