Rail connectivity to Mizoram: Indian Railways (IR) is planning to open the Bairabi-Sairang rail link, connecting Mizoram’s capital Aizawl to the other parts of the country. This much-anticipated project is expected to be inaugurate by Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week. This railway project will significantly boost connectivity and economy in the Northeast.
Aizawl to Silchar Train
Once operational, the new line will reduce the current seven-hour road journey between Aizawl and Silchar to just three hours by train. At present, travellers heading to Aizawl have limited options – either by taxi, bus or a flight. The train journey will also make the journey more faster, safe and economical.
Earlier this year, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) authorised the commissioning of the newly constructed Broad Gauge (BG) line from Hortoki to Sairang, the final leg of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line project.
The CRS inspection was conducted via motor trolley/on foot, followed by a speed trial using an inspection special hauled by a diesel locomotive. The Hortoki–Sairang section lies in a hilly terrain and includes 32 tunnels and 35 major bridges. The CRS inspection was carried on 6th and 10th June 2025. With this, the entire 51.38 km-long new railway line project gets completed, bringing direct rail connectivity to the state capital, for the first time.
