External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday spoke with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi and expressed condolences following the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the country overnight. Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry reported over 800 deaths from the disaster.

Jaishankar said that India has delivered 1,000 family tents to Kabul, and 15 tonnes of food are being transported from the Indian mission in Kabul to Kunar province. Additional relief material will be sent from India starting Tuesday.

In a post on X, he wrote: “Spoke with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi today. Expressed our condolences at the loss of lives in the earthquake. Conveyed that India has delivered 1000 family tents today in Kabul. 15 tonnes of food material is also being immediately moved by Indian Mission from Kabul to Kunar. This came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of life saying “India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid.”

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected,” he wrote in a post on X.

Rescue teams are working in remote, mountainous areas to reach people trapped under debris. The epicentre was near Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, with a 4.7-magnitude aftershock recorded shortly after, according to the US Geological Survey.

“The number of casualties and injuries is high, but since the area is difficult to access, our teams are still on site,” said Sharafat Zaman, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s health ministry.

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority reported deaths and injuries across the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapadare.
