    Never had beef says Salim Khan

    Veteran actor and producer Salim Khan has revealed that his family does not consume beef. While acknowledging that a lot of Muslims in India do eat beef, as it is cheap, Salman Khan’s father pointed out what Prophet Mohammed said. Cow’s milk is a substitute for mother’s milk, and cows should not be killed, and beef is forbidden, he said in a recent interview. Read more

    At least 800 killed in earthquake in Afghanistan

    At least 800 people have been killed, and 2,500 injured in the powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan. The magnitude 6 earthquake struck the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar on Sunday. The epicentre of the earthquake was about 27km from Jalalabad and 140km from Kabul. India has pledged to provide all assistance to Afghanistan for disaster relief. Read more

    Dhankhar to move to INLD chief Abhay Chautala’s farmhouse

    Former Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down from his post last month, is set to  vacate the V-P’s official residence and shift to a farmhouse of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief Abhay Singh Chautala in South Delhi’s Chattarpur Enclave. 74-year-old Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President on July 21, citing health reasons.     After record rains in August, Himachal to receive more downpour in September

    Himachal Pradesh, which has been battling one of the worst floods in recent times, will receive above normal rains in September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. According to IMD, Himachal Pradesh this August was the wettest the state has been in 76 years. Himachal Pradesh recorded 431.3 mm of rainfall in August, resulting in flooding and landslides across many parts of the state. Read more

    Isolated Amazon tribe in Peru enters another village

    An isolated Amazon tribe in Peru has reportedly made contact with a neighbouring village, raising concerns among activists about their future. The Mashco Piro, which lives deep inside the Amazon forest, is one of the world’s largest uncontacted groups and there is a fear that since they lack immunity to common diseases, a simple common cold could prove fatal for the community once they come into contact with the outside world.
