Iran, who are the second-best team in Asia based on rankings, are the team to beat in India’s group. Iran started their own campaign at the CAFA Nations Cup tournament with a 3-1 victory over Afghanistan. India got the 2-1 win over Tajikistan with an emphasis on set-pieces and quick counter-attacks. In the form of Iran, though, the Blue Tigers will face an aggressive, attacking unit with plenty of firepower.
This is what Khalid Jamil had to say ahead of this match: “The win in the last game was a huge motivation for us, but the main thing right now is to be ready for the Iran game. We’ve had two days to recover, and now we need to ensure that everyone is fresh when we face Iran.”

A long throw-in, a goalmouth scramble and a scrappy goal headed in by a defender. The Khalid Jamil era of Indian football started out in characteristic fashion. But it got better a few minutes later as another defender tapped a loose ball home to give India a two-goal lead in their CAFA Cup opener against hosts Tajikistan.
Over the course of the rest of the match, India resisted wave after wave of attacks, let in a goal, conceded a penalty that goalkeeper and captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu saved, headed, kicked and willed the ball clear and finished on the right side of a 2-1 scoreline.
