It isn’t often in modern day college sports that we see a team dominate for a decade. It’s even less often that we see two teams stay atop the rankings as long as the Wisconsin and Ohio State women’s hockey have. The Badgers and the Buckeyes have been dueling for hockey dominance for nearly seven years, and they continue their storied rivalry Feb. 6 and 7, as No. 1 Wisconsin hosts No. 2 Ohio State.

Wisconsin leads the season series after sweeping the Buckeyes on the road in December. The Badgers are 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings and 84-26-11 all-time against Ohio State. The upcoming two-game series marks the 14th and 15th straight games where the Badgers and Buckeyes are ranked No. 1 and No. 2. While the rankings have flip-flopped in that time, these two teams have proven themselves as the premiere programs in women’s college hockey in the 2020s.

We dove into the numbers to give you a sense of just how dominant these two teams have been over the years. Here are eight crazy numbers behind the Ohio State vs. Wisconsin women’s hockey rivalry ahead of their top two matchup this weekend.

13 — The number of consecutive games where Wisconsin and Ohio State have been ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the USCHO polls or in NCAA tournament seeding. The last game that wasn’t No. 1 vs. No. 2 was the 2023 national championship game. At-large Wisconsin beat No. 1 Ohio State.

9 — Wisconsin has been ranked No. 1 in nine of those 13 meetings. Ohio State was No. 1 for the other four.

3 — Three of those 13 were championship games: the 2024 WCHA Final Faceoff, 2024 national championship, 2025 national championship.

18 — Eighteen straight games have featured the No. 1 ranked team. The last time Wisconsin vs. Ohio State didn’t feature a No. 1 team was in the 2022 WCHA semifinal; No. 2 Ohio State beat No. 4 Wisconsin.

50 — Saturday’s game will be the 50th meeting in a row where at least one of the teams is ranked No. 1 or No. 2. The last time neither team was ranked in the top two was on Oct. 11, 2015. No. 3 Wisconsin shut out Ohio State, 8-0.

3 — The Badgers and Buckeyes have met in three straight Frozen Four championship games. Wisconsin holds the head-to-head advantage, winning two of three in 2023 and 2025. The Badgers have a rich history of title game appearance streaks, making four in a row from 2006-09. Only Minnesota has more consecutive appearances, making the title game five times from 2012-16. Ohio State has burst onto the scene in recent years, making four straight title runs after appearing in its first national title game in 2022.

6 — Six national championships in six years between Ohio State and Wisconsin, going back to 2019 (2020 cancelled due to COVID-19). Wisconsin has four in that stretch, while OSU has two.

10 — Ten players are out of the lineups this weekend as they compete for their national teams in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
